After a strictly limited debut album on Sonderuebertragung Sunday Strain is back with new energy and ideas.
Formed in 2005 as a side project of Llovespell it is now a full-grown band still experimenting but this time also using bass and drums instruments accompanied by clear and strong vocals of Dorain W.
"Destiny.Done" brings over 45 minutes of sophisticated electronic music with admixture of pop elements and dark atmosphere.
Mastered by Andreas Wahnmann (First Law) comes in an elegant 6 panel digipack designed by Hans Johm (Antlers Mulm).

Brutal Resonance

After a strictly limited debut album called 'Red, Black and White' which was released in 2008 on the label Sonderübertragung, Sunday Strain is now here with their new album 'Destiny.Done' released on Wrotycz Records.

Sunday Strain and their new album is described as ”sophisticated electronic music” and I must say that it's spot on. It's gloomy, calm and slow electronic music together with what almost could be described as ambient pop. At some points during the album (especially during the third track “Savior Machine”), you'll find some similarities with Deine Lakaien as they both share the dark, yet driven, musical structures. However, the minute you feel comfortable with doing that comparison, it all changes to something completely different.

The singer Dorain W. has a great voice and she sings far back in her throat that extracts to an almost haunting experience. However, in the choruses, the voice blooms out and shows great talent, especially noticeable in the beautiful second track “Waiting For You”.

The bass, drums and keystrokes does not stand on in the immediate light, instead hiding more in the shadows, bringing tension and emotion, but most of all highlighting Dorain's voice in just the right way, like in the fifth track with the same name as the album.

'Destiny.Done'with its nine tracks might not be for everyone. Even though it's far from introvert, it's still far from club friendly nor is it traditional pop. But if you sit back and relax for a while, you'll find it to be a very pleasant and peaceful experience, just like I did.

After a strictly limited debut album on Sonderuebertragung, Sunday Strain is back. Formed in 2005 as a side project of Llovespell this is a minimalistic album accompanied by Dorain W’s vocals.
Sometimes poppy, sometimes dark, this is a down tempo record. “Temporary Files” immediately reminds me of Yazoo’s downbeat tracks and Alison Moyet’s vocals. The music itself is minimalistic, sometimes with an IDM approach, but the trip hop beats have the upper hand. Dorain’s voice stands forward but unfortunately the production of the vocals could have been much better. You might call me a hair-splitter but I immediately had the feeling the vocals were recorded with a dynamic mic instead of a condensed one.
In other words there are some good ideas, but such a fragile record needs the finishing touch which is lacking here.

Con all'attivo solamente un CDr, rilasciato nell'esigua tiratura di 149 copie numerate a mano nel 2008 dalla Sonderübertragung!, quello dei Sunday Strain non è un nome che ha sin qui circolato granché, anche nei circuiti a noi cari... Eppure è un progetto nato dalla mente di Stephan Spreer, già nei Radio Eichenlaub ad inizio millennio e fondatore degli interessantissimi Llovespell a seguire, e quindi musicista d'esperienza e comprovate qualità. Sunday Strain nasce come side-project degli stessi Llovespell (vivi e vegeti, laddove Radio Eichenlaub non esiste più, e l'altra sua metà Hans Johm ha inteso proseguire col monicker Antlers Mulm), e trova nella polacca Wrotycz l'etichetta giusta per esordire su CD, attestando di non essere solamente un'attività estemporanea, bensì un progetto da coltivare a dovere. Accompagnato dalla singer Dorain W., il Nostro si ripresenta con la consueta volontà di non sottostare a schemi precostituiti, focalizzando il proprio songwriting verso la costruzione di canzoni ancor più efficaci e coinvolgenti. Cercare di affibbiare una qualche etichetta semplicistica al duo tedesco è impresa ardua: la loro è un'elettronica sinuosa e magnetica dai tratti downtempo che non si pone paletti di sorta, né a livello di melodie, né di strutture ritmiche, degnamente completata dalla voce di Dorain, abile interprete - ma con ulteriori margini di miglioramento - con una predilezione per le più fascinose cantanti degli anni '80 (Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, Claudia Brücken, Tanita Tikaram...). La forza del duo sta nel sedurre con una miscela perfettamente bilanciata di atmosfere suadenti e suoni di classe, anche quando il piglio ricorda da vicino i Deine Lakaien ("Saviour Machine"). E quando i toni scuri si fanno da parte, è netta la sensazione di trovarsi di fronte a musicisti talentuosi che, col giusto supporto, potrebbero ottenere consensi trasversali: ne sono chiara testimonianza due momenti melodici e di ampio respiro come "Time Is With Me" (ripresa dal CDr d'esordio) e la title-track, fra accenni ai Delerium di maggior pathos e cantati di altissima qualità, e quindi in possesso di tutti i crismi dei singoli più raffinati che certi mercati offrono. Il manto sonoro è sempre e comunque seducente, anche quando i toni si fanno cupi come in "Dandelion", song che si fregia di atmosfere e cantati di mirabile caratura; non sono da meno uno strumentale del calibro di "Cyan", perfetto per far risaltare l'azzeccata produzione e la qualità di suoni ed arrangiamenti, ed una "White World" fortemente carismatica. Chiude in maniera emblematica "Autumn Waves", piccola perla dal respiro sacrale che sa spingersi nei territori oscuri che furono cari ai Kirlian Camera d'inizio millennio. Un duo ben fornito di capacità e talento che saprà sedurvi con la forza magnetica di brani dall'enorme potere seduttivo, da tenere sotto osservazione per il suo grandissimo potenziale: non ci stupiremmo affatto di ritrovare i Sunday Strain alla corte di etichette più grandi e con più mezzi, ma non c'è motivo di attendere ulteriori sviluppi per scoprirli.
